Show Title: "Put Reading First"
Show Description: This show covers the five (5) fundamental building blocks for learning
to read. Those building blocks are: * Phonemic Awareness * Phonics * Fluency * Vocabulary
* Test Comprehension
Good reading skills are required to do well in school and to do well in life.

Show Title: "Leaping Into the 21st Century"
What is Leap/iLeap and what it means to you.
Start Date: February 19, 2007
There are two Leap/iLeap Shows. Each will be shown on alternate weeks until March 19, 2007
Show Description: These shows provide information for parents, grandparents and guardians about how these standardized tests (Leap/iLeap):
When did they start?
Why do they exist?
How do the results affect your child?
How do the results affect your child's school?
How to help prepare your child for these tests.
Also, details are shared about some of the books and other materials such as Internet web sites available to help prepare your child for Leap/iLeap.

Show Title: "Healthy Snacks Made Simple"
Show Description: Mandy Armentor, a registered dietitian with the LSU AgCenter in Vermillion Parish is in the kitchen with a student and his mom from Cankton Elementary School. They are preparing some healthy snacks: "Ants on a Log" which is (Celery with Peanut Butter and Raisins) "Rainbow Fruit Kabobs" (Bananas, Strawberries, Grapes, Honey Dew Mellon, Pineapple on skewers)
The show uses the medium of cooking to reinforce vocabulary, math and reading skills for students ranging from Kindergarten thru 6th grade. These are the vocabulary words taught: chop, bowl, skewer, fruit and fiber
Children who help prepare healthy snacks are more like to eat healthy snacks. Better nutrition can lead directly to better health for all of us.

Show Title: "Easy, Healthy Kid Friendly Meals"
Show Description: Our registered dietitian from the LSU AgCenter in Vermilion Parish is in the kitchen with a student and his mom from Southwest Elementary School in Opelousas.
They are preparing an Easy Healthy meal: Taco Soup
The show uses cooking terms to reinforce and grow vocabulary skills. These are the cooking vocabulary words taught: brown, boil, drain, soup, beef
Children who help prepare healthy meals are more likely to eat health meals. Better nutrition can lead directly to better health for all of us. Healthy meals need not take long to cook. The Taco Soup prepared during the show took about 30 minutes to prepare.

Show Description: In Part 1 of this two parts this show we talk to 5 teachers from 5 different St Landry Parish Schools to get a good cross section of homework policies.

Show Title: Technology in the Classroom
Show Description: Interactive Whiteboards-English, Math and Mark Up
Interactive Whiteboards are a relatively new technology in some
St. Landry Parish Schools. They are devices that project information from a
computer onto a regular classroom whiteboard. The teacher controls the computer
using an electronic stylus or digital presentation pen and never actually touches the computer.
This technology helps the students learn more, learn faster and remember more.
Tricia Fontenot from Grand Prairie Elementary gives us a demonstration of her
Interactive Whiteboard and conducts lessons in English and Math.

Show Title: Technology in the Classroom
Show Description: Interactive Whiteboards-Science, Mark Up
We continue our program on Technology in the Classroom. In this show Tricia Fontenot
demonstrates the Mark Up capability of her Interactive Whiteboard and also
conducts a science lesson.
Ms. Fontenot tells us about some of the advantages of today's technology for both
the students and the teachers.
Her science lesson is on the planets and their positions in the solar system
relative to the sun. She also tells us about some great websites with good
information to help students do better in school. Watch as she encompasses a
wireless keyboard into one of the lessons.
